Seeger and Nicole have been good friends for twenty years and are in touch daily about everything going on in their lives: Seeger’s garden, his colleagues at the plant nursery, birds they’ve spotted, good pubs and the work they both make. Sharing their process usually comes with the question, “Is this something?”
In November, the friends will have their first exhibition together. Although their work is very different, the everyday is a recurring theme for both.
Seeger Baas (1979) says his subject matter isn’t based on current events, and that he wouldn’t call it spectacular either. He finds inspiration in images he comes across online and in the world around him. Old family albums are a source of inspiration too. The more trivial, the better. But even when he finds something that catches his eye, it’s still a question whether he’ll succeed in turning it into a work he’s actually satisfied with.
Nicole Pedder (1987) is drawn to the challenge of mastering techniques. She has explored disciplines such as drawing, papier-mâché, and animation, and sculpting has now become her main focus.
With each project, she begins with a clear vision of the final piece. Her recent work is about pets. She was inspired when her cat reached the end of his life. Nicole knew she needed to make something to fill the void he would leave and to honour his memory, so she created a life-size sculpture. Since then, she has made sculptures of other pets, in which she tries to capture their character.
